Photographs of Perth, Western Australia Home | Locality A-Z | Notes Gidgegannup Thriving and picturesque small town on the Toodyay Road between Midland and Toodyay. Named after Gidgegannup Spring found by surveyors in 1852. Gidgegannup is derived from Aboriginal "Place where spears are made". |

Gidgegannup - Garage Entering town from the west, this is one of the first buildings in town. It's obviously a Shell garage, but there are also a number of other shops in the complex, including a hair salon around the corner, a real estate agency, a newsagency and a bottle shop. February 2011 |

Gidgegannup - Bottle Shop This is the front of the Gidgie bottle shop. I like the sign over the door. Before World War 2, this area was known as Hampstead Hills. It gained its current name from the local brook. In the early days the locality was supported by timber milling. These days it's mixed farming. February 2011 |

Gidgegannup - Saddlery There is evidence of a healthy equestrian presence around the district hence the need for this Produce and Saddlery outlet. It's around the back of the Shell garage. February 2011 |

Gidgegannup - Bakery Down towards the east end of town is the Gidgegannup Bakery. An attractive looking building. February 2011 |
Gidgegannup - Junction Shops Right next door to the Bakery (you can see a bit of this place in the Bakery shop) is "Gidgie Junction". Sanga Jack's store is predominant - a fish & chips, pizza and burger place. February 2011 |

Gidgegannup - School The local primary school is on the south side of the Toodyay Road. Like many country schools at present, construction work is going on the extend and refurbish parts of the school. It's actually quite a big school considering the overall size of the town. No doubt country children bus in each day. February 2011 |
Gidgegannup - Water Tower Outside the school (you can see the school in the background) are these two water towers which would provide the town water supply. Up nice and high to increase the water pressure. February 2011 |
Gidgegannup - Park A rather small peaceful park just off the highway. Here is one on the picnic shelters. February 2011 |
Gidgegannup - Paddocks A little to the west of town, down the road to the oval, the colour of these paddocks show the effects of a long and dry summer. February 2011 |
Gidgegannup - Church This is the Gidgegannup Community Church. A modern structure which is shared by a couple of denominations which is a little unusual for many country towns. Combined services are held for Anglican & Uniting Churches whilst Catholic Masses are held at other times. February 2011 |

Gidgegannup - Highway A view west along Toodyay Road. The school and associated construction is off to the left. On the right is a restaurant sign though the restaurant itself didn't look very functional today. February 2011 |

Gidgegannup - Hall Now we get to the Gidgegannup Show Grounds. Right inside the main gate is the local hall. A sturdy brick building which photographs quite well. February 2011 |

Gidgegannup - Hall This is the rear of the Hall. Shade cloth keeps picnic tables etc out of the direct sunlight. February 2011 |

Gidgegannup - Show Grounds The Gidgegannup Show is held each year usually the last weekend in October. There will also be a Small Farm Field Day here on May 28th, 2011. I bet this "Burgo's Bar" is a hive of activity during show times. February 2011 |

Gidgegannup - Show Grounds One of the main features of an Agricultural Show is, of course, the showing of livestock. Here is a shed or two of animal pens not far from Burgo's Bar. February 2011 |
Gidgegannup - Show Grounds And the show ground's Farrier's Barn. Of course we all know that a farrier is one who shoes horses, and can also describe a person who looks after horses in general. It is also an alternative name for a veterinary surgeon! February 2011 |

Gidgegannup - Show Grounds Equestrian events on a rather dry and dusty show ground arena. February 2011 |

Gidgegannup - Store After leaving the townsite and travelling east a short way, you come across this store next to the highway. It's the Gidgee Convenience and Stock Feed Store. They had some interesting items on display at the front. To the right out of picture is the stock feed shed. February 2011 |
