Kellerberrin

Small townsite on the Great Eastern Highway which services the surrounding agricultural area. Located some 23 kilometres east of Tammin. History re post office, old NSW bank, Regent Theatre, Elders, Memorial Hall, railyards and Convent courtesy Mr Reg. James, resident of Kellerberrin 1932-1952.

North to Trayning

West to Tammin

Kellerberrin - Post Office

Just look at this post office. Absolute fodder for a camera enthusiast! It's the first building that caught my eye as I drove into town. Established in 1912 and built with that remarkable curved front. The Postmaster's quarters used to be up on the top floor. June 2011

Kellerberrin - Old Bank NSW Building

This old building rather intrigues me. Look closely (as I did when I was there) and at the top is says Established 1817, which is well before this town was even thought of. Through Reg. James'  good advice I have learnt this is the old Bank of NSW building and the 1817 might have been the year the bank itself was established. June 2011

Kellerberrin - Old Regent Theatre

This Massingham Street building is mostly boarded up and looks unoccupied. This was formally the Regent Theatre and in the old days movies were shown most nights of the week and it had a picture garden behind with deck chairs for the summer. Concerts, balls etc were also held here. June 2011

Kellerberrin - Elders Store

Once again, Elders makes its welcome rural presence felt. This is a relatively large Thrifty Link store on Massingham Street. whilst on the same site, the building is rather more elaborate than the Elders of old (pre 1952). June 2011

Kellerberrin - Massingham Street

A Sunday afternoon view looking east down Massingham Street (Massingham Street is actually part of Great Eastern Highway). June 2011

Kellerberrin - Massingham Street

And another Sunday afternoon view looking west down Massingham Street. June 2011

Kellerberrin - Massingham Street

A slightly more front-on view of shops on the main street taken from about 100 metres west of the photo above. June 2011

Kellerberrin - National Australia Bank

Once again, the National Australia Bank seems to be the only one in town. Well done NAB. June 2011

Kellerberrin - Anglican Op Shop

A peak through the windows of the Anglican Opportunity Shop on the main street. It's open Thursday, Friday and Saturday mornings only. June 2011

Kellerberrin - Memorial Hall

This is the local Memorial Hall.  It was built in the 1960’s and the site was formerly part of the Road Board complex, housing machinery and plant. The old office was situated on Massingham St.   June 2011

Kellerberrin - Fire Station

Fabulous looking sturdy old fire station. I don't think it serves as a fire station anymore - perhaps a museum of sorts? Nothing on the building to show although in another photo I saw, I espied an "open" sign out the front. June 2011

Kellerberrin - Motor Hotel

This building looks very recent. I believe Kellerberrin had an old hotel which was destroyed by fire in 1999 and it stood on this very site. June 2011

Kellerberrin - Train Station

Kellerberrin Prospector and Avon Link stop. You can see the main street over in the background. In the old day here was barracks for resting rail crews, loc sheds, multiple tracks on which were shunted wagons, vans, locos etc. The railway station was opposite the main part of town and it had a traditional wooden station building, including a passenger waiting area. It also had a loco inspection pit dug between the tracks being about 1½ metres deep and about 5 metres long, in which the odd unwary local would fall when trespassing on foot through the rail yards at night, instead of going over one of the two vehicular crossing provided. June 2011

Kellerberrin - Farmers Co-Op

The Kellerberrin Farmers Co-op which is two doors east from the Post Office. June 2011

Kellerberrin - CWA Building

The CWA House looking rather blue. In fact I've noticed quite a few CWA buildings around the country are painted blue. Is this just co-incidence? June 2011

Kellerberrin - Anglican Church

This is the Anglican Church of Australia, St John the Baptist, Kellerberrin. The Foundation Stone was laid by Hon. James Mitchell M.L.A., on 16th February 1910. June 2011

Kellerberrin - Uniting Church

Originally a Methodist Church, the building was constructed and opened in 1910. The Reverend Fred Finch, the first Methodist Minister in the district, laid the Foundation Stone. The front porch was added in 1939 and rear hall around 1960. June 2011

Kellerberrin - Elegant House

A fine Kellerberrin house on the main street. Steeply pitched roof, careful paintwork, cool verandah and meticulous maintenance all adds to up elegance. June 2011

Kellerberrin - Moylans - Old Flour Mill

Moylan Silos currently occupies what was once this Flour Mill. I think the mill is actually used by Eastern Districts Seed Cleaning Co., whereas Moylan's construct those small-ish silos. There are hundreds of new silos on the land adjacent. June 2011

Kellerberrin - District Museum

This is known at the Kellerberrin Historical Society District Museum, alas closed at the time I passed by. The building look like it used to be a church or church hall however advice from Reg. James confirms it was actually the Courthouse. Some of the exhibits are next door, in Pioneer park, June 2011

Kellerberrin - Pioneer Park

And here is a look in Pioneer Park - that's the District Museum Building behind. A few vintage tractors are shown in the picture. June 2011

Kellerberrin - Bridge

This cute looking bridge is used by the walkway to overpass a stream or drainage channel. Very innovative. June 2011

Kellerberrin - Catholic Church

Simply known as the Catholic Church on its signage. This is on the north side of town. The Foundation Stone is written in Latin. The Church was dedicated and opened by the Reverendissimo Mons. Verling V.C., on the 5th October 1916. June 2011

Kellerberrin - Convent

Adjacent to the Catholic Church is the new St Joseph Convent. This Convent occupies what was the original Convent site during the period 1916-1976. St Joseph ’s order, in addition to running the Convent, also had a large group of buildings about 2 kms north of the town and situated just in front of the Kellerberrin Hill which was called the Preventorium. I understand it was for children needing nursing and a healthy environment and I think those with chest complaints. June 2011

Kellerberrin - Side Street

A view down a side street next to the road house at the east end of town. You can see the edge of town and farmland beyond. That grey shed on the left is used for Yabby storage. June 2011

Kellerberrin - TAFE

Again on the main street, this is the C.Y. O'Connor College of TAFE. Is it just the office or do they actually hold classes in here? June 2011

Kellerberrin - Highway Home

Time to turn around and go home. This is a couple of hundred metres from town, heading west. June 2011
