Maylands

A large inner-city suburb bounded by the Swan River to the east and Mount Lawley/Bayswater to the west

North to Meltham

West to Inglewood

Maylands - Buddhist Temple

This is a really well-known landmark for anyone travelling along Guildford Road, Maylands. It's the Buddhist Temple. If you think it looks good from the outside, you can stop off and have a look inside - it's quite spectacular. June 2008

Maylands - Old Train Station

Part of the old train station has been preserved, and here it is, looking rather grand. June 2010

Maylands - Old Train Station

This is the back view of the old train station. The parcels office etc. June 2010

Maylands - 8th Ave - New Shops

Here is the Whatley Crescent end of Eighth Avenue. It very recent times it has undergone a significant transformation with all these new shops springing up. June 2010

Maylands - 7th Avenue Bridge

The old rickety wooden 7th Avenue Bridge spans Whatley Crescent, the train lines, and Railway Parade on the other side. June 2010

Maylands - 7th Avenue Bridge

A closer view of the 7th Avenue road bridge. June 2010

Maylands - 8th Avenue - Shops

The "top" end, that is the Guildford Road end of Eighth Avenue looks much the same as it always has. June 2010

Maylands - Central House

This rather grand looking building is Central House. It's on the corner of Guildford Road and Eighth Avenue. June 2010

Maylands - Central House

Central House again, this time looking across Eighth Avenue. Downstairs is shops & offices. I wonder who or what is upstairs? June 2010

Maylands - Library

The Maylands Hall and Public Library cuts a fine figure on Guildford Road. Buildings of this vintage invariably look appealing. April 2008

Maylands - Learning Centre

This former church or chapel on Seventh Avenue is now a Children's Open Learning Centre. June 2010

Maylands - Old Post Office

On the corner of Seventh Avenue and Whatley Crescent is the old Maylands post office. June 2010

Maylands - St Joseph's Hall

Nice brickwork - this hall is on Seventh Avenue. June 2010

Maylands - Church - 7th Ave

A graceful Church on Seventh Avenue. June 2010

Maylands - Interesting Church

I was intrigued by this little church. It's right behind the church in the above picture and appears to be on the same land so it would appear they are somewhat connected. June 2010

Maylands - Old Toilet

You don't get to see too many of these anymore - and this one is in such good condition. It's part of the church's) above. June 2010

Maylands - Hotel

The grand old Maylands Hotel stands on Railway Parade right next to the railway station. These days its days of beer and accommodation are over though! September 2010

Maylands - Hotel

The front view of the Maylands Hotel. You can see that the Dome coffee people are leasing a part of the hotel these days. September 2010

Maylands - Peninsula Hotel

Not a very flattering picture of the Peninsula Hotel which is right next door to the old Maylands Hotel. Architecturally they are like chalk and cheese but both serve (or did serve) a good cold beer! September 2010

Maylands - Brickworks

These old brickworks complete with chimney stack and kilns have been preserved. The land around here was, up until only a couple of decades ago, a quarry and general wasteland. These days the Maylands golf course lives here, together with many fine residences and parks. October 2010

Maylands - Jetty

Although a little bit sad and neglected with a few boards missing etc, this jetty (right next to Tranby House) on the Swan River looks quiet picturesque. Whereas it's out-of-bounds for mere humans, river birds have found sanctuary here. October 2010

Maylands - Tranby House

Tranby House is an historic building just off Johnson Road down near the end of Peninsula Road. This is a view from the south-east. October 2010

Maylands - Tranby House

A closer view of the eastern end of Tranby House. This is the "river" end. October 2010
