Northbridge

Colourful locality immediately to the north of the city known for its nightlife and Asian food shops

North to Highgate

South to Perth City

Northbridge - William Street

Looking south down William Street towards Perth City. The AMP building looks well guarded by those other two vertical pencils. 2007

Northbridge - William Street

Sieu Thi Golden Gates is just one of many Chinese shops along William Street.  By May 2008 this shop is no longer yellow, it's red, and no more groceries - now it's clothes and Chinese bric-a-brac. 2007

Northbridge - William Street

Wing Hong butcher's shop is really popular particularly with Asian customers. Good fresh meat as prices that are lower than out in the suburbs. 2007

Northbridge - William Street

Colourful Asian supermarket "Dashijie International" on William Street. July 2010

Northbridge - William Street

Apparently this building used to be a house of ill-repute but its history is sure to go back further! It's been recently taken over and renovated and now contains interesting Asian shops and offices, including Chinese FM radio station. July 2010

Northbridge - William Street

A view down William Street looking towards the city. Note the new footpaths - all new brickwork laid over the last 12 months or so. July 2010

Northbridge - William Street

An Indian supermarket, then a Chinese supermarket (VHT) following by Wing Hong butchers. Always very busy on a Saturday morning. 2007

Northbridge - William Street

The north end of William Street. This is a block of shops on the corner of Brisbane Street. These were purpose-built shops with living quarters upstairs and constructed in 1915. 2007

Northbridge - William Street

Northbridge is still far from maturity - many of these seedy looking boarded-up derelict buildings still exist. Well done City of Perth for improving the footpaths & roads in this area. 2007

Northbridge - William Street

This is the rear of that derelict building - taken 3 years after the above, and it still looks just the same! July 2010

Northbridge - Money Street

A grand dwelling on Money Street. 2007

Northbridge - Vietnamese Temple

This temple is on Money Street. The incense wafts across the street. A relative new-comer to Northbridge, it was constructed as recently as 1990. 2007

Northbridge - Money Street

These new apartments are in a newly renovated and converted old Mackays Aerated Waters soft drink factory. July 2010

Northbridge - Money Street

Just around the corner off William Street is Money Street and it seems a world away with this avenue of lovely trees. The Vietnamese Buddhist church is on this street. The houses are becoming more and more affluent as old houses are renovated or rebuild. 2007

Northbridge - Elegant House

This house is typical of many elegant building cropping up in this area - either by renovation or new construction. July 2010

Northbridge - Monger Street

Very interesting building (constructed 1897) on the corner of Monger and Beaufort Streets. Nice brickwork. July 2010

Northbridge - Monger Street

Orange winter leaves, the red brickwork and even the red car combine to give this photo quite a good earth-colour effect. July 2010

Northbridge - Brisbane Street

This building used to be a post office. More recently it was a foreign language book shop. Now it's offices. It was built in 1896. July 2010

Northbridge - William Street -  Mosque

On the corner of William Street and Robinson Avenue, this Mosque is a familiar landmark. It is hard to believe this was built as long ago as 1904.  July 2010

Northbridge - Brisbane Street

The photo is the upper facade of the Co-Masonic Temple on Brisbane Street. This is St Cuthbert's Lodge and it was built in 1936. July 2010

Northbridge - Robinson Street

Looking up Robinson Street from William Street, there is an All Seasons residential hotel - the Acacia. The hotel has a number of very well appointed function rooms upstairs, plus restaurant, bar etc at ground level. July 2010

Northbridge - Chung-Wah HQ

The Chung-Wah building on James Street. Upstairs is the home of Chung-Wah Association which conducts many activities for the Chinese Community. August 2009

Northbridge - Valentino's

Valentino bar (and restaurant?) is a great shade of blue. This is also on James Street near Lake Street. August 2009

Northbridge - Impact Bar

The Impact Bar on James Street looks colourful. I think it's on the corner of Lake Street. August 2009

Northbridge - Old Police Courts

This building is the original old Police Courts. Later it housed the Perth Local Court (civil financial proceedings). Newer courts are now scattered around the city. Nice to see the building so beautifully preserved. It is right at the southern end of Stirling Street. You can see the BankWest Tower in the city in the background. January 2012

Northbridge - Court Hotel

The Court Hotel - or wine bar now? The pub got its name and used to be well frequented from staff across the road in the Police Courts building. It's at the southern end of Stirling Street. January 2012

Northbridge - Brass Monkey

On the corner of James and William Streets is the impressive Brass Monkey Hotel. This used to be known as the Great Western Hotel. January 2012

Northbridge - Old Bell Tower

On the corner of Beaufort Street and Francis Street is this old bell tower. It was built in 1937 but not here - it used to live at the Loreto Convent in Claremont. The bricks were brought here and the tower was re-built in 1991 although I don't think each brick is in its original position! The Bell Tower Cafe is located behind. January 2012

Northbridge - Hans Cafe

A little further up Beaufort Street but still on the corner of Francis Street is this fine row of shops complete with impressive turret on this end of the building. January 2012

Northbridge - Brisbane Hotel

Looking like a slice of cake, the Brisbane sits on a wedge-shaped parcel of land on Brisbane and Beaufort Streets. The moody paintwork works well in daylight and is probably a bit eerie in the dark. It actually is really eye-catching. January 2012

Northbridge - 1903 Shops on Beaufort Street

This striking row of Federation shops is on Beaufort Street, on the corner of Newcastle Street. They are all unoccupied now, but the tide will turn. The building was constructed in 1903. Up the top, you can faintly see one of the very old tenants who is seems had "named rights" - George & George, Drapers. January 2012

Northbridge - Protestant Hall

On Beaufort Street and almost across the road is this old Protestant Hall building which dates back to the Federation era. January 2012

Northbridge - Chinese Gate

Chinese gates off Roe Street not far from William Street. They look very impressive but there's not much behind them! March 2008

Northbridge - Northbridge Hotel

The fine old Northbridge Hotel on the corner of Brisbane and Lake Streets, Northbridge. Constructed in 1897-1898, this pub was originally called the Royal Standard Hotel. December 2011

Northbridge - Brisbane Street Vietnamese Restaurant

Across from the Northbridge Hotel, on the other side of Brisbane street, is the Phi Yen Vietnamese cafe and restaurant. This building was erected in 1905 and must have quite a history. December 2011

Northbridge - Heritage House on Newcastle Street

How about this? This big block - bounded by William, Newcastle and Money streets - is being redeveloped. Nothing unusual about that except this small house is heritage listed and thus can't be demolished. So the builders work around it and will incorporate it in the final design. This is looking side-on, looking west on Newcastle Street. April 2012

Northbridge - Heritage House on Newcastle Street

The same heritage listed house. This is looking at the rear. You can see Emma's over on William Street. Excavations below will include car-parking! Retention of the house must have added a fortune to the site development. I'll come back when the development is done and take another picture to see how it looks. April 2012
