Perth City - St Georges Terrace

The heart of Perth and business district. Starting at the west end then heading east towards Victoria Street

North to Hay Street

South to Esplanade

West to West End   East to Victoria Square

Perth - Barracks Archway

The remains of the old Barracks - the Barracks Archway - all lit up and presiding over this end of St Georges Terrace. Match 2011

Perth - QVI and Woodside

They say if you want to appreciate the history of Perth buildings, look up. Often details of the building's original name/use/date are etched into the top. So we'll start looking up, but not at old buildings - these are the QV1 and Woodside office towers at Milligan Street. November 2010

Perth - St George's House

On the corner of St Georges Terrace and Mount Street is the fine old St Georges House - recently up for lease - I wonder who will move in? November 2010

Perth - St George's Square

At the west end of St George's Terrace, not far from Mount Street, is St George's Square office block. May 2010

Perth - Cloisters

The Cloisters on St Georges Terrace at the top of Mill Street always looks good. The building was designed in 1858 and has served (over time), as a boy's school, a girl's school, clergy training facility, private residences, a university hostel, and the ground floor once was an Ansett Airlines office. May 2010

Perth - Parmelia Hotel

On Mill Street the Parmelia Hotel. Once upon a time this was the cream of the hotel crop in Perth. Probably still good though now there is more competition. May 2010

Perth - Old Perth Boys School

Tremendous looking stone work on the Old Perth Boys School. Does this place open to tea and scones during the week (you have to buy them of course)? This was built in 1854. It was taken over as a Technical College in 1898 and is now owned by the National Trust ( as serves as their headquarters). May 2010

Perth - St Georges Terrace

A Sunday view down St Georges Terrace from outside the Old Perth Boys School. This is looking east. May 2010.

Perth - Old Technical School

The old Tech School on St Georges Terrace is boarded up for what looks like renovations so this is all I could photograph on this day. This building was constructed in 1910 as Perth's first purpose-build tertiary education facility. May 2010

Perth - Palace Hotel

Once the popular lunch venue for Terrace lawyers, accountants and financiers, what's left of the old hotel turned into a bank and now perhaps just office space. Bondy's building (behind the hotel) displaced the hotel. This hotel was built in 1896. May 2010

Perth - Trinity Church

Again on St Georges Terrace, now we're between William and Barrack Streets. This is the Trinity Church. The Church was built in 1897. May 2010

Perth - Trinity Arcade

Nice view of Trinity Church and the start of Trinity Arcade near St Georges Terrace. 2007

Perth - Old Treasury Building

The old Treasury Building is a piece of fine architecture on the corner of St Georges Terrace and Barrack Street. The Treasury vacated this building some years ago. Not sure of who is going to move in here next but the building is safe as its apparently heritage listed. This used to be known as the Central Government Offices and was built in 1874. The Land Titles Office also used to be in here. July 2010

Perth - St Georges Cathedral

Back on St Georges Terrace. Who can recall in the 1970's when Rock Masses were popular in churches. Perth band Bakery used to play in here. This Cathedral was designed by Edmund Blacket and was built between 1879 and 1888. July 2010.

Perth - Bert Memorial Hall

A little bit further east from St Georges Cathedral is the Bert Memorial Hall of St George's Cathedral. July 2010

Perth - The Deanery

The Deanery - which I guess is the home and/or office of the Dean of the Cathedral sits proudly on the Terrace. This was built in 1859 as a residence for the first Dean of Perth. July 2010

Perth - Council House

Council House was built in the 1960's and, at the time, was the tallest building in Perth. Council House later fell out of grace with some city designers and armchair critics due to the perceived bland 60's architectural style. However, the building is back in vogue again so it looks like staying! This year squillions of lights were fitted to its exterior so it lights up in waves of synchronised tones after dark. July 2010.

Perth - Government House

This splendid Governor's residence is set behind walls in sumptuous gardens a little east of the Supreme Court. The Foundation Stone was laid in 1859 and it took around 5 years to build. July 2010

Perth - Duxton Hotel

We're getting very close to Victoria Street now. The Duxton Hotel was originally the Australian Taxation Office building. The tax office choofed off to Northbridge and Duxton refurbished the building. At this site (1 St Georges Terrace) before all this was the Perth Christian Brothers College. July 2010

Perth - Concert Hall

Purpose built Concert Hall has always been used for "non-rock" type of events - opera, theatre etc etc. The Entertainment Centre, on the other hand, was there to serve Genesis and Bob Dylan fans. Alas the Entertainment Centre shut down its speaker systems years ago. But the Concert hall keeps on going. July 2010
