Perth City - Wellington Street

Starting at the east end and walking towards the west

North to Arts Precinct

South to Murray Street

East to East Perth

Perth - Royal Perth Hospital

Royal Perth Hospital is an icon on Wellington Street. Nice brickwork. November 2008

Perth - Wellington Street

Back on Wellington Street, the sandstone brickwork on this Perth YHA building looks great. Next door, to the right, is the Red Cross. November 2008

Perth - Wellington Street

Wellington Surplus Store on Wellington Street has been there for s far as I remember and probably equally as far back again. November 2008

Perth - Grand Hotel

The Grand Hotel on Wellington Street, just east of the train station. Grand? Perhaps one day it might have been but it certainly isn't these days. November 2008

Perth - Barrack Street

Looking down Barrack Street from Wellington Street. You can see the Town Hall down there. 2007

Perth - Wellington Street

Wellington Street looking east from the walk-way over this road between Myers and Perth train station. 2007

Perth - Train Station

Perth train station entrance looking like it has done for decades. The train station was designed by George Temple-Poole and built between 1893 and 1894. March 2008

Perth - Train Station

Perth Train station. A little modernised but it still looks pretty much as it did 40 years ago. Only Metro passenger trains and the Australind run from here now. No more Westland, Kalgoorlie Express, Bunbury Shopper, Albany Progress, Midlander or Mullewa Express! 2007

Perth - Train Station

A glimpse inside Perth train station taken from the old bridge which links platform 5 with 6 and 7 - where the Fremantle trains leave from. Today 3 trains await commencement of their journeys. August 2011

Perth - Train Station

Again from the footbridge, this photo takes in some of the fine architecture of Perth train station. Pictured is the "main" platform - the one closest to Wellington Street. August 2011

Perth - Train Station

Here is the fine old wooden footbridge which links the main platform to that where the Fremantle trains depart. This is looking west, towards City West Station (and beyond). August 2011

Perth - Train Station

The "Australind" nestles into its Perth platform after a good diesel trip from Bunbury. Ready to go back again! May 2008

Perth - New Train Station

Only  couple of weeks after opening this place is still spick and span. The new Perth Underground Station! 2007

Perth - New Train Station

Perth Station has two new platforms underground. Only opened a week ago, here is a train just about to depart for Clarkson. 2007

Perth - New Train Station

Looking north up the tunnel from the new Perth Underground Station. Up that way is back into the light and off to Leederville. When the London Underground was first being built around 1863, they used to dig up the streets, build the tracks/stations, then put a roof over it and fill in the hole again. Very inconvenient for road users. Henry Greathead invented the "metal tube" that let the builders work underground. The basis of this technology is still in use today. 2007

Perth - Globe Hotel

The Globe Hotel on Wellington is shining a bit like a globe in the sun today. 2007

Perth -  William Street

The south-west corner of Wellington Street and William Street. 2007

Perth - Entertainment Centre

The Entertainment Centre on Wellington Street. This is around where the entrances are. Mothballed for years I think this place is due for demolition. March 2008

Perth - Entertainment Centre

The Entertainment Centre again looking from the west along Wellington Street. The car park had gone and this place sure has been neglected. Pity. March 2008

Perth - Entertainment Centre

An update on the Entertainment Centre. Now it's in an advanced demolition form. In the background in the Telstra building. August 2011

Perth - Telstra Building

On Wellington Street near the end of Queen Street is the Telstra building. You can see the St George Building in the centre, peeking through. August 2011

Perth - Housing & Works Building

And on Wellington Street is the Department of Housing and Works Building which looks rather grand. August 2011

Perth - View from Footbridge

The old iron footbridge linking Wellington and Roe streets, spanning the train tracks, is still going strong. This is a view from up on the footbridge looking south to Wellington Street and beyond. August 2011

Perth - City Train Lines

Viewed from the iron footbridge. A Clarkson-bound train has emerged from the tunnel portal from the rail underground. Those tracks to the left are used by Fremantle trains - soon to be also in a tunnel, I believe. This is looking east - over there in the background somewhere is Perth station. August 2011

Perth - Corner of Milligan Street

This curved building on the corner of Wellington and Milligan Streets used to be a garage and motor repair shop, with a bit of car-parking thrown in for good measure. August 2011

Perth - Old Garage on Milligan Street

A little up Milligan Street, this is the southern side of that curved building. This used to be a service station and right there at ground level were the petrol pumps. I think this was a favourite re-fuelling stop in the old days for taxis. August 2011

Perth - Apartments - Milligan Street

On the other southern corner of Wellington and Milligan is this huge block of apartments which actually look quite pleasing. Good one for inner-city living. The building next to it, on the right, is the Citigate Hotel. August 2011

Perth - New Stadium

Some love it, some hate it, nevertheless it's here - or at least coming. This is the new stadium being built on Wellington Street west. This is a view from the iron-bridge overpass. August 2011

Perth - New Stadium

This view of the new stadium is from Wellington Street. It's taken years to build. This was the site of the old Wellington Street Markets. August 2011
