Pinjarra - Railway Precinct

A fairly major town on the South Western Highway about 85 kms south of Perth. These photos are of the historical railway yards

Pinjarra - Train Station 2005

Pinjarra Railway Station as it is today. On this site was the original wooden structure which was burnt down some years ago. These days the Australind (Perth-Bunbury) stops here plus it's a base for Hotham Valley Railways who run historical train trips to Dwellingup amongst other places. 2005

Pinjarra - Train Station 2009

Pinjarra train station has grown up a lot since the above was taken in 2005. It's now the Station Heritage Centre doing justice to rail history of the town. March 2009

Pinjarra - Train Station 2011

Here is a view of the main platform from the small elevated section from which passengers board and alight the Australind passenger service. August 2011

Pinjarra - 'Australind' Passenger Service

The Australind - a three-car set today - pauses at Pinjarra right on schedule at 10.42am on its way to Bunbury. August 2011

Pinjarra - Railway Barracks

A little to the east of the station are these, a section of the old Railway Barracks where train crews, drivers, firemen and guards would overnight. These crews would have mostly come from Perth or Bunbury, work a train to Pinjarra and then work another back the next day. August 2011

Pinjarra - Railway Barracks

A closer view of a section of the Barracks. These days I think the diligent Hotham Valley volunteers occupy these premises. August 2011

Pinjarra - Hotham Valley Station

This is a view from Pinjarra Station, across the tracks to the Hotham Valley Railway Pinjarra platform and depot. Right now Hotham Valley trains don't run all the way into Pinjarra because of exorbitant insurance fees to use a few kilometres of government owned track. A real tragedy. August 2011

Pinjarra - Hotham Valley Platform

Standing on the Hotham Valley Railway platform. That little goods van off to the left is the station toilet facilities! August 2011

Pinjarra - Hotham Valley Shed

A rear (eastern) view of the Hotham Valley Railway platform and shed. August 2011

Pinjarra - Hotham Valley Signal Tower

And set just a little south of the Hotham Valley platform is this cute signal tower. Upstairs all the levers are neatly in place but the pulleys and wires out to the points no longer exist. The points around here (except on the main line) are all manual. August 2011

Pinjarra - Hotham Valley Rail Workshop

Over the other side of the track near the Barracks is this shed. It may not look much but inside is where the HVR volunteers turn run-down locomotives and passenger cars into ones that are sparklingly serviceable. August 2011

Pinjarra - Hotham Valley Rail Workshop

Here is a peek into the HVR engineering compound. This is taken from just near the main Perth - Bunbury line. August 2011

Pinjarra - Inside the Workshop

And finally into the workshop itself. This is-work-in-progress. The red locomotive is 706, badged as 'Narrogin'. Is this a 'P' class? The locomotive on the right undergoing boiler maintenance is W908. The 'W' class was the next size down from the mighty 'V' class. August 2011

Pinjarra - X-Class Diesel Locomotive

Outside the HVR workshop is this X- class diesel locomotive stripped of all easily-visible identification markings so I don't known its series number. August 2011

Pinjarra - 'Banksiadale' Locomotive

Sitting across the track patiently waiting for work are two locomotives which have been used on the run up to Dwellingup. This one is W945 badged as Banksiadale (named after a former small town which was up near Dwellingup). August 2011.

Pinjarra - 'Marrinup' Locomotive

Behind Banksiadale is W903 badged as Marrinup which looks like it is undergoing some boiler work. Marrinup is named after a forest/locality near Dwellingup. August 2011

Pinjarra - 'South Fremantle' Locomotive

The last locomotive of the trio of this line is this cute little diesel badged as 'South Fremantle'. Not sure of its class or prior life - perhaps a yard shunter? August 2011

Pinjarra - Old Metro Diesel

Tucked right over in the corner of the yard, as far away as you can get, are these two railcars. The look like they are old metropolitan diesel rail-cars which were in use on the passenger runs around Perth in the 1950's and 1960's. Any identifying markings have been painted over although on the car closest to us, there is the number 605 up near the roof. There is another one of these still with its original colours - take a trip (on this site) to Boyanup. August 2011
