Pinjarra

A fairly major town on the South Western Highway about 85 kms south of Perth

North to Pinjarra Railyards

West to Ravenswood

South To Coolup

East to Dwellingup

Pinjarra - Premier Hotel

This is just across the road from Pinjarra Station and I think the only hotel operating in Pinjarra at present and it looks fine. Let's now go over the bridge and work our way south through the town. August 2011

Pinjarra - Bridge over the Murray

After leaving the railway station, trundle over this famous Pinjarra landmark - the bridge over the Murray River. And here it is. Legend has it that a ghost crosses this bridge on one night each year. 2005

Pinjarra - Murray River

Looking down from the Murray River Bridge, this is the river - rather murky looking but plenty of water considering it's December. The river wends its way over towards Mandurah. 2005

Pinjarra - Bush near Murray River

This is the bush and path over to the Murray River behind the church. You can glimpse the road bridge going across the river. That's the bridge we trundled across from the train station to the town! 2005

Pinjarra - Church

The Anglican (formerly Church of England) church down by the river. Rather low country here on the banks of the Murray. Once years back this church got totally flooded. I think that was the early 1960's. It looks very picturesque these days. 2005

Pinjarra - Church

Another view of the church and part of the churchyard. You can see the Murray River Bridge in the background. 2005

Pinjarra - Edenvale - Old Butchers Shop

Just next to and a little "behind" the Anglican Church is an amazing compound of old buildings and magnificent gardens called Edenvale. This is the old butcher's shop which was constructed many years ago although exact year is unknown. August 2011

Pinjarra - Edenvale - Old School

This fine building used to be the old school. It was operated here in situ. It was constructed right at the end of the 19th century. Now it proudly houses Pinjarra Patchwork and Quilters. August 2011

Pinjarra - Edenvale - Old School

Here is the old school again. This time a view from the north. The sunshine brings out the excellent brickwork and architectural features. August 2011

Pinjarra - Edenvale - Old Schoolmasters House

Right next to the Old School is the Old School House - the old schoolmaster's house. I think this is used as a private dwelling right now. August 2011

Pinjarra - Edenvale - Old Schoolmasters House

A peek at the Old School Masters House from the south side. This building was constructed in 1896. August 2011

Pinjarra - Edenvale - Arts & Crafts

Murray Arts and Crafts complete with a symmetric spider's web! This building is the original Public Works Building and was relocated to Edenvale by the Shire of Murray in 1983. August 2011

Pinjarra - Edenvale - Arts & Crafts

This is a more distant view of the Arts & Crafts Building, viewed from close to "The Old Barn" (Craft workshop). August 2011

Pinjarra - Edenvale - Roger May Museum

The Roy May Museum appears to be housed in two buildings. This one is full of wonderfully restored bits of machinery. The building next door houses restored motor vehicles and tractors. August 2011

Pinjarra - Edenvale - Heritage Tearooms

A popular venue for visitors to Edenvale is the Heritage Tearooms. This is a view from the rear and is being well-patronised today. August 2011

Pinjarra - Edenvale - Heritage Tearooms

Another view of the Heritage Tearooms, this from an easterly aspect taking in part of the front and side. The front of the building is heavily treed and difficult to photograph. The building looks fantastic. August 2011

Pinjarra - Edenvale - Liveringa Homestead

The last building in Edenvale for today. This is the Liveringa Homestead built about 1885 by Mr Edward McLarty (and what a well-known Pinjarra name that is!). The homestead is named after a pastoral station in the north-west which Edward helped establish. August 2011

Pinjarra - Edenvale - Liveringa Homestead

Another aspect of the Homestead. The Heritage Trail sign seems at odds with another which states this building was constructed circa 1860. August 2011

Pinjarra - George Street

Across the other side (east side) of George Street are these buildings. The one on the left is occupied by Travelscene. Off to the right and out of picture is the old Taylor's Shop. That fine building right of picture is actually behind Taylor's shop. August 2011

Pinjarra - Exchange Hotel

Still on George Street, alas the Exchange Hotel is now closed for business due to the building being in poor repair. August 2011

Pinjarra - Steam Train Cafe

On the west side of George Street is the Steam Train Cafe. Decades ago this shop (with a different name) was run by the Jansen family. August 2011

Pinjarra - Post Office

Another truly fine Post Office. This face is road-side. Not sure if this place is still operated by Australia Post. August 2011

Pinjarra - Post Office

This is a side/rear view of the Post Office. Off to the left is a small park which leads down to the Murray River and the swing bridge that spans the river to the eastern bank. August 2011

Pinjarra - Swing Bridge

This swing bridge is located just behind the post office and provides pedestrian access for those who live on the other side, to the town centre. Popular with tourists, this bridge spans the Murray River. March 2009

Pinjarra - Main Street

The main street of Pinjarra has hardly changed a bit in 40-50 years apart from shops changing names. The Copper Kettle has gone and so has Jansen's cafe. 2005

Pinjarra - Court House

The old Court House on the main street. This is next to the 60's-ish police station. March 2009

Pinjarra - Road Board Building

Another fine old building  - they really did know how to build in those days! From the mid 1870's to 1935 the Road Board actually occupied these premises. The Alcoa sign out the front says 1909 but I'm not sure what that date actually signifies. August 2011

Pinjarra - Junction Shops

Things seem to be booming in Pinjarra. This shopping centre (on the right of the main road when heading south and is before the Mandurah turn-off) is zipping ahead. It's called Pinjarra Junction. March 2009

Pinjarra - Uniting Church

This is the Uniting Church on the corner of George Street and Pinjarra Road. Originally is was the Methodist Church. The Foundation Stone was laid by William James George MLA on 2nd July 1910. Is it after he who George Street is so named? August 2011

Pinjarra - Uniting Church

The Uniting Church has been extended over time and here is a rear view from a few metres up Pinjarra Road. August 2011

Pinjarra - Masonic Hall

And on Pinjarra Road is this fine Masonic Lodge which was constructed in 1903. The building is undergoing maintenance right now - you can see how wonderfully the upper section has already been renovated. August 2011

Pinjarra - Shire Memorial

Still on Pinjarra Road, this is the Shire of Murray war memorial which is located in front of the Shire offices. That white building across the road is the Pinjarra Doctors building. August 2011

Pinjarra - Shire of Murray

The front of the administration offices of the Shire of Murray. August 2011

Pinjarra - Civic Centre

Right next to the Shire of Murray Offices is the Civic Centre. Us high-school students used to go here decades ago for Pinjarra High School "socials". August 2011

Pinjarra - George Street Shops

Colourful Settler's shop and florists next door. Shop further up the street used to be a bric-a-brac shop and restaurant but the food side of things has gone. August 2011

Pinjarra - St Augustine's Church

On George Street getting on towards the high school is St Augustine's Catholic Church. August 2011

Pinjarra - St Joseph's School

In part of the St Augustine's Church complex is St Joseph's Catholic primary school. August 2011

Pinjarra - Murray Leisure Centre

Next to the High School, turn left down Camp Road and you'll come across the Murray Leisure Centre. A large complex and not easy to photograph. This section takes in the main entrance. August 2011

Pinjarra - Murray River

There is a cement track that runs down behind the Murray Leisure Centre to the river - and when you get to this wooden bridge you can cross the river. Very peaceful down here this morning and the trees were full of singing birds. August 2011

Pinjarra - Murray River

A view across the Murray to a steep embankment. Up on top of the embankment is approximately the rear of the Roads Board Building on George Street. August 2011

Pinjarra - High School

The front of Pinjarra High School. This used to be the main entrance to the school but the door has been bricked up now. Have to go around the back through the tradesman's entrance? 2005

Pinjarra - High School

Looking down the side of what was (is) the manual training rooms at the High School. The nearer room was used for Domestic Science. The next room was woodwork and metal work. The old Technical Drawing room (Mr Norm Dix's other workplace) has disappeared. 2005

Pinjarra - Shops

Across the road from the high school are these shops. Back in 1965 there was a tuck shop here called "Mann's" who sold a really mean Peter's Pie to many a peckish lunch-time student. 2005

Pinjarra - Traders

George Street turns into McLarty Road south of the Pinjarra Road intersection. This is Pinjarra Traders on the south side of town. I feel sure this building was once Lane's Garage and perhaps also sold motor vehicles? August 2011

Pinjarra - Thai Restaurant

On McLarty Street is this very attractive looking Ken and Angie's Thai and Chinese Restaurant. Next door is an Oriental grocery store. August 2011

Pinjarra - Hospital

Getting on towards the southern outskirts of town can be found the Murray Districts Hospital. This entrance is at the end of McKay Street. August 2011

Pinjarra - Paceway

And the last two pictures for now. At the south end of town is Pinjarra Paceway, a race track used for horse trotting meetings. This is the main entrance and rear of the main grandstand. August 2011

Pinjarra - Paceway

Today people were busy preparing the track for a trot meet the next day. After all the rain, there is a decent sized lake in the paddock in the centre of the track. August 2011

Pinjarra - Kingsley Fairbridge

Set in the pathway that runs from the rear of the Murray Leisure Centre down to the river are a number of plaques commemorating significant people and events in the history of Pinjarra. This one servers as a memory to Kingsley and Ruby Fairbridge and the original Farm School. August 2011
