Rottnest Island

Popular holiday resort island situated in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Fremantle

East to Fremantle

East To Hillarys

Rottnest - Main Jetty

At the arrival/departure jetty to/from Fremantle or Hillarys. Can you see Perth City skyline in the centre of the photo, right on the horizon? It's pretty small from here. January 2009

Rottnest - Thompson's Bay

This is Thomson's Bay North looking from the Main Jetty, where we just got off the boat. January 2009

Rottnest - Thompson's Bay

Well here we are at the top of Thomson's Bay (North) looking back over the houses and beach. January 2009

Rottnest - Hotel

The Rottnest Hotel aka Quokka Arms. Who hasn't heard a story or two told about this place? We only had one glass of lemonade here this day. January 2009

Rottnest - Hotel

More of the Quokka Arms - is this an accommodation wing? January 2009

Rottnest - Settlement Station

Rottnest has a railway line which was built by the military in the 1930's. It runs from Settlement Station to Oliver's Hill where in the old days was a military post. The line fell into disuse for many years but today it alive and well with its tourist diesel. This is the station of course at the "settlement" - Thomson's Bay settlement. January 2009

Rottnest - Tourist Rail Car

Here is the Settlement - Oliver's Hill train at Settlement Station. January 2009

Rottnest - Shopping Area

In the Shopping Mall this is one of the entrances to the General Store. A great shop loaded with all sorts of things. All we were after was a cool drink but we could have stayed in here a while (despite no air conditioning - bumma - aren't we sooks). January 2009

Rottnest - Shopping Area

Looking down the Shopping Mall on a busy holiday day. Certainly being well patronised. January 2009

Rottnest - Shopping Area

In the Shopping Mall again. There are several food outlets. Red Rooster was doing a roaring trade. This place is a little more up-market - Quokka Joes - looks great - we'll be back! January 2009

Rottnest - The Lodge

A Rottnest Lodge accommodation wing, I think. Well it looks like that but we didn't try to go in and check. January 2009

Rottnest - Accommodation

An accommodation unit on Abbott Street. Mind you, not all the digs are as swish as these. These are multi-bed (2-6) for families. There are some smaller cottages also available for rent. January 2009

Rottnest - Accommodation

Rottnest accommodation for rent. This one is of course on Cusack Street (cnr Somerville Drive). January 2009

Rottnest - Museum

This is the Museum on Kitson Street only about 2-3 minutes walk from the Shopping Mall. January 2009

Rottnest - Picture Hall

The Picture Theatre building took me back to old 60's Mandurah days with open air pictures and deck chairs. Perhaps it didn't quite look like this but the air/simplicity took me back? January 2009

Rottnest - Chapel

This old chapel looks quite grand. It's on Kitson Street right next to the entrance to the Rottnest Lodge. January 2009

Rottnest - Government House Lake

A 2 minute walk through trees from Settlement Station takes you to Government House Lake. A salt lake which is apparently fed through the limestone from the sea. January 2009

Rottnest - Salt Store

The Salt Store. Didn't get time to go in there so don't know what its purpose is today but I think the name is self-evident of original use. January 2009

Rottnest - Lomas Cottage

This is Lomas Cottage. This was purpose built (but not as big as it is now) for John Lomas, an ex-Fremantle convict who apparently had problems fitting into mainstream life after his internment. He came and lived here and grew vegetables etc outside his front door. Not a bad life I guess, for him then, after all he'd been through. January 2009
