West Leederville

Popular inner-city residential suburb bounded by Subiaco and Lake Monger

West to Wembley

East to Leederville

West Leederville - Flats - Cambridge St

Right down at the Southport Road end of Cambridge Street are a number of blocks of flats. This is Cambridge Court. Beautiful gum trees surround the building. January 2011

West Leederville - Flats - Cambridge St

Again near Southport Street are another couple of multi-blocks of flats. This is "Kings" obviously at number 32. I don't know what living there is like but the location is fabulous. January 2011

West Leederville - Town Hall

A little to the west of both blocks of flats above, and adjacent to a council park and car park is this rather grand looking Leederville Town Hall. January 2011

West Leederville - J.B. O'Reilly's

If you fancy a pint of Guinness, this pub on Cambridge St is the place to go. On this day the street (and pub) was swarming with West Coast Eagles supporters. The game at Subiaco starts about 50 minutes after this picture as taken! Want to know the score? Well, Sydney won by 5 points. The pub looks good in the setting sun. June 7, 2008

West Leederville - J.B. O'Reilly's

An update of the pub in the above photo. Gone has the O'Reilly's shingle. The colour has changed. At least they still have the huge Guinness signs! So what is it called now? Oh, I see it now (in Jan 2012), there is a really tiny JB sign. January 2011

West Leederville - Coles on Cambridge Street

On Cambridge Street just before the sun goes down. This Coles has only been here about one year! June 2008

West Leederville - Train Station

A view down the train line from the little road bridge that crosses the tracks - I think it's Hamilton Street. The road goes from Railway Parade into some leafy Subiaco Streets. January 2011

West Leederville - Railway Parade

Almost across the road from West Leederville station, on Railway Parade are these shops. One of particular interest (to me), but alas not in this photo, is Serendipity Books - a haven for old-book lovers - it's just off the photo a bit to the right. January 2011

West Leederville - Fire Station

On McCourt Street just across the road from St John of God Subiaco Convent is this old fire station. A few years ago I think this was a craft shop. It doesn't look like it's doing too much today. A fine looking old building. January 2011.

West Leederville - International Beer Shop

Now we're getting down to business. Alas this shop was not open when I was there to take this photo (at 7.00am) - if it was I'd be in there! It's on Woolwich Street but I'm not sure of the cross street. I'll be back! January 2011

West Leederville - Catholic Education Centre

These fine buildings on Ruislip Street, Leederville are the home to the Catholic Education Centre. The buildings used to be known as the Home Of The Good Shepherd and were built in 1908 as an "Industrial Home" for young female "juvenile delinquents" and remained thus until 1979. Many girls were wards of the state. It was run by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd. This is looking up to the main entrance. January 2011

West Leederville - Catholic Education Centre

Here is another view of the southern facade. In its very early days this was also was known at the Good Shepherd Convent. The Foundation Stone was laid on the 5th November 1903 by the Most Reverend M. Gibney, Bishop of Perth. January 2011

West Leederville - Catholic Education Centre

A view along the front corridor of the Catholic Education Centre. It feels like it absolutely reeks with history. January 2011

West Leederville - Catholic Education Centre

This is the church next to the centre. It was a much later addition, in fact built in 1938 along very traditional lines. January 2011

West Leederville - Lake Monger

A visit to Lake Monger in early January - lots of water and lots of birds - must have been the good rains we've had this (last) year. Plentiful swans are as cheeky as ever. Pity there are so many seagulls gobbling up duck and swan food! January 2009

West Leederville - Lake Monger

Lake Monger again, looking west towards Harborne Street and Wembley etc. January 2009
