Wongan Hills

A major town on the Northam-Pithara road, some 182 kilometres north-east of Perth. This thriving town supports the surrounding agricultural region

Wongan Hills - Train Station

The old Wongan Hills train station beautifully preserved. There is a tourist centre inside now. October 2011

Wongan Hills - Goods Shed

Across the train tracks from the station is this old goods shed which has been decorated with a mural depicting freight and a locomotive of yesteryear. October 2011

Wongan Hills - Water Tower

Part of the railyards. Steam locomotives took on water and coal here. The water tower looks dark and forbidding contrasting with the white of the sign and blue of the sky. October 2011

Wongan Hills - Railways Barracks

The railway barracks have been deemed worthy of preservation which is wonderful. Wongan Hills was a major train crew swapping point and drivers, firemen and guards would overnight here and work a train back to their originating depot the next day. October 2011.

Wongan Hills - Old House

On the main road next to Dunnings Service Station is this solid looking old house, seemingly unoccupied now. I bet it has an interesting history. October 2011

Wongan Hills - Post Office

A very functional post office one street back from Fenton Place. I wonder whether there was ever a grand old P.O. here like in most country towns? I couldn't readily identify one. October 2011

Wongan Hills - Newsagency

In the main shopping area on Fenton Place is the Wongan Newsagency. October 2011

Wongan Hills - Civic Hotel

And further down Fenton Place, almost at the southern extremity is the Wongan Hills Civic Hotel. The hotel construction was completed in 1940 and designed to that it could be converted to a war-time hospital if the need arose. October 2011

Wongan Hills- Farmers Shop

Again on Fenton Place, this is the attractive looking Farmers Shop. The main entrance is off to the right side in the picture, a little around the corner. October 2011

Wongan Hills - Kanyanya

Kanyanya Store for clothing, bric-a-brac etc is set in a cute row with the two houses on the right. October 2011

Wongan Hills - High School

This is the front wing of the Wongan Hills District High School. It's unusual to find a school which likes to have its photo taken! October 2011

Wongan Hills - Museum

This building houses the Wongan-Ballidu Museum. The building was originally constructed as the town's hospital. The Government of the day in (1930's and prior) rejected the town's plea for a hospital on the grounds that there was one in Dalwallinu. Dr Stenning was instrumental in raising funds to have this built independently of Government. October 2011

Wongan Hills - Pioneer Doctor's House

Dr Stenning - the pioneer on the original local hospital - had this house as his residence. The house was built around 1930. October 2011

Wongan Hills - Back Streets

This photograph depicts a back-street scene in Wongan Hills. The roads are typically very wide. October 2011

Wongan Hills - Masonic Hall

Constructed in the 1920's this is what once as the local Masonic Lodge. It operated as such until around 2003 when the Lodge amalgamated with Dowerin. The Apex Club how occupies the hall. October 2011

Wongan Hills - Anglican Church

Fabulous looking St Peter's Anglican Church. The Foundation Stone (mostly now obscured by a ramp) was laid the Archdeacon Riley on February 7th, 1932. The quality of this building is a true credit to its congregation and caretakers. It is sparkling! October 2011

Wongan Hills - Mount O'Brien

Mount O'Brien is in the Wongan Hills group a few kilometers west of the town. The hill sports communications equipment but also a road has been constructed to navigate vehicles to the summit to take in the views. October 2011

Wongan Hills - Lake Hinds

This is a view west from the summit of Mount O'Brien. Looking across the farming paddocks you get a really good view of Lake Hinds which would be 5-6 kilometers away at its nearest point. October 2011
