Hopeland

Hopeland is a largely agricultural area set just west of Serpentine. The locality is home to the Serpentine Airfield and the Weather Bureau Radar installation. The area was one part of the Peel Estate Group Settlement Scheme. These schemes acquired parcels areas of land through grants which were set aside to assist European (mostly British) migrants. Many of the schemes failed as did this one, at least in this vicinity. Mostly through poor land or too far from civilisation

Hopeland - Hopeland School

The former Hopeland Primary School built in 1933 on Hopeland Road. This is a few kilometres west of the Serpentine townsite. The school opened in 1924 and then closed in 1954. This building is now used as the Hopeland Community Centre. October 2013. Photos Ref: HOPE001

Hopeland - Serpentine Airfield

Further west still from Serpentine and indeed not too far from the Kwinana Freeway. Off Yangedi Road is the Serpentine Airfield, home to the Sport Aircraft Builder's Club. It has a sealed runway which is more than the Murrayfield Airfield near Mandurah can claim. October 2013. Photos Ref: HOPE002

Hopeland - Serpentine Airfield

Beyond the runway are many sheds such as these which are used for housing, building and maintaining the club members' light aircraft. Many roads around here double up as taxi-ways (or the other way around). October 2013. Photos Ref: HOPE003

Hopeland - Serpentine Weather Radar

Up a track behind the Serpentine Airfield is the Bureau of Meteorology weather radar which services a radius of some 256 kilometres including the Perth Metropolitan area. This is what tells us rain is coming on the BOM website. October 2013. Photos Ref: HOPE004

Hopeland - Weather Radar

This is the base station and base of the radar tower. Warning signs advise of a potential radiation hazard. The radar tower resembles a lighthouse with that doorway at the bottom. October 2013. Photos Ref: HOPE005
